The Relationship Between the Federal Government and States Argumentative Essay
The government of the U.S. has been on constant change. Since the independence of the United States till present, a lot has changed .The United States Central and the states government has undergone a lot of transition to the current date where their relationship as well was not left unaffected. The United States constitution provides for a link between the congress and the state government. Articles of confederation The articles of confederation are thirteen and they served as the initial constitution of the independent U.S. They stipulated how the central government was to operate and relate with the states. The provisions of the Articles These articles created an integration of and a perpetual union of the independent states thus limiting the powers of the National government. In the central government was the House of congress in which each of the states had a one vote. The articles in addition empowered the congress to borrow coin or even appropriate funds besides being able to declare war and order, sign alliances and treaties with other nations. The congress also had power upon budgeting the costs of the government to request the states to make donations so as to meet the government budgets. As such the government was financed by the States of which the donations were not equal in all statesà (Barbara). The articles did not provide for autonomous executive arm of the government as well it did not allow any veto on law making. The judiciary was respected by all the states. A constitutional amendment to the articles was supposed to be approved by all the states. Virginia and New Jersey plans The Virginia plan had a proposal of a central government that could not only legislate the laws but also enforce them. The central government was also empowered to levy taxes. According to these plans, America would have two governments:à the central and the state governments. This is what is referred to as a federal government is. Besides dealing with representation in the Parliament, it also addresses other issues. It specified that, the central government should be divided into three arms. That is, Parliament, Executive and the judiciary. The Virginia plans are said to have favored the populated states as both the two houses were to have proportional legislation. Smaller states were scared over these plans and they claimed that these plans were not democratic as they suppressed themà (John). Eventually after the hot debate was over, the smaller statesà à came up with their own plans the New Jersey plans. It is also referred to as Paterson Plan This plans provided for a l egislature with one house and also equal representation. This plan was seen as a part of the articles of confederation. Federalist papers They were printed in 1787 to request voters in New York to ratify the proposed draft constitution. The series of 85 essays which are a major source in interpreting the constitution of U.S. These papers give an outline of a lucid version of the motivation of the system of government that was proposed. The federalists sought to persuade the vote in support of ratification. United States Constitution This is the supreme law of the U.S.A. It stipulates the organization of the government of the United States and it also provide for the relationship that exists between the central government and its states, and the people of the United Statesà (Barbara). It creates three arms of the U.S government. This includes the Parliament, The executive and the Judiciary. Besides, it creates the duties and powers of each and every arm of the government. It also reserves the powers of the states. The constitution of America creates a government that is federal. This means that power is shared between the central or National government and the local governments (states). Despite the fact that each of the state has its own constitution, no section of these constitutions should contravene the U.S constitution. For instance, a state constitution has no power to deny the accused the right to trial. This is assured in the United States constitutional amendment no.6. Some of the powers that are provided for by the constitution for the central government include: Declaration of war and order, minting money, signing treaties with other powers, legislating statutes that are vital for enforcing the constitution. On the other hand the powers that are reserved for theà state governments include conducting elections, establishingà local governments, ratifying the amendment that are proposed,à establishing local governments, the provision of safety and public health besides other p owers that are shared by both the national and local government. They include: collecting taxes, borrowing money, making laws, general developments of infrastructure, setting up courts among othersà (Gregory). There has been a conflict of power allocation between the two types of government in U.S. In a convention in 1917 delegates observed that, the constitution lacked a clear explanation of the locus of independence. This left people to deduce that, the constitution created two centers of power. However the central government is more powerful than the local governments. A powerful and consolidated central government will run a roughshod in the States. In the old days, rights in the States were protected. An early debate was concerned whether the states were falling in the jurisdiction of the federal government and the Supreme Courtââ¬â¢. The case CHISHOLM V. GEORGIA, the court ruled that, the state was subject to the judicial review. This saw the push for the eleventh am amendmentà (U.S. Congress). Two federalists, James Madison and T. Jefferson, made the proposal that, the VIRGINIA AND KENTUCKY RESOLVES to make the role of states in maintaining checks and balances in the powers of the central government clear. This led to the passage of ALIEN ENEMIES AND SEDITION ACTS in 1798. This limited number of liberties. Works Cited Barbara, A. American Government and politics today. New York: Cengage Learning, 2008. The Organizational Structures And Culture - 2323 Words
1.1Different organisational structures and culture Every business needs to organise its activities and a defined structure enables them do it well. For example, every area of the business knows what they are supposed to do and when to do it. In addition, they know who to report to with the aid of a good structure. On the other hand, organisational culture is something that is not tangible but can be observed in the way people do the things they do and in the way they treat one another and their customers. There are many different types of structures any organisation can operate with depending on what their purpose is but, for this study, the following types of organisational structures will be discussed: the flat structure, the tallâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is frequently used by public sector organisations. Organisational culture Organisational culture can be defined as a collection of beliefs and norms shared by individuals and groups in an organisation. It is those norms that control the way they do things and the way they relate with themselves and with their customers. The culture of an organisation can be perceived and felt but, may not be easily explained. Culture is developed and transferred in conscious ways and unconscious ways from one generation to another. There are different types of culture: the power culture, role culture, task culture, the person centred culture and many other types of culture. The power culture The power culture is a centralised type of culture where control is from the top. Decisions are made from the top without participation from the workers. It is mostly used by small businesses. This kind of culture may lead the workers to believe that they are not important and can cause workers to keep leaving for other organisations. The person /welfare culture This kind of culture is mostly seen in non profit organisations and in social activities groups. The task culture This is the kind of culture that is based on the working together, to finish tasks. This kind of culture can increase motivation because it is usually for a specific period of time. For example in projects where workers from different departments in the organisation can be brought together to work and when

Culture refers to the way of life that is defined by the behaviour, knowledge, and beliefs throughout the lives of people. It includes the way we think, our behaviour, and life which are shaped by the political, economic, and historical conditions prevailing in a particular geographical region. . It has a subsidiary in China. The set up of the plant in China wasnââ¬â¢t without challenges. Part of the problem included the Chinese educational system which wasnââ¬â¢t up to par with the American university system, the home of parent company. Therefore, students hired by Intel in China lacked the high level expertise required. Language barriers were another challenge since people of China speak Chinese language and their form writing is different from that in America. Other cultural barriers included social inequalities and jealous, gender insensitivities, style of dress, mode of communication, national pride, religious belief and local customs. Traditionally, filial piety and families are priorities. Thus outside organizations have great difficulty cultivating loyalty. Chinese are known to undermine others of lower class. To synchronise the level of expertise between the American employees and the Chinese employees, Intel Corporation sent the Chinese employees to America for further training. It also developed a policy that encouraged constructive confrontation, where employees would criticize their colleaguesââ¬â¢ and managersââ¬â¢ ideas. The purpose of the policy was to allow constructive resolution rather than employees undermining each other during disagreements. Thus, employees had to prepare sufficient data to oppose a given decision before a scheduled date of implementation. Since confrontation alone cannot resolve all matters, a supplementing mechanism was put in place to implementing decisions in case disagreement persisted. Intel also promotes one-on-one consultations between managers and employees, where employees air their views to their seniors confidentially. These practices go well with the Chinese culture since Chinese by and large are more comfortable opening up on a one-on-one basis. Apart from encouraging employees to contribute ideas, Intel also allows them to error without fear of penalty. Why people may not appreciate the cultural point of view of others Attitude plays an important role in appreciating diverse cultural orientation. The mindset of people may cause one to disregard others peopleââ¬â¢s cultural standings. Lack of education, may lead to the perception that others cultures are inferior due to their norms, beliefs and values. Moreover characters in a person can contribute to rigidity in accepting contribution of people from societies with a different cultural setting. Past engagement may evoke feelings of rejection especially if the relation was unhealthy. Effect of appreciating cultural diversity on ability of people to communicate effectively in an international organization Cultural diversity is the multiplicity of cultures or human societies in a certain region. Appreciating cultural diversity is vital in an organization. The cultural limitations of employees are addresses. For instance, difference in education systems means the level of expertise is different. Through training programs, effective communication may be achieved. This would in return enhance human relation among employees and between management and employees. By recognizing the cultural variation, employees respect each others values and beliefs. Recommendation on steps to take and suggestion of appropriate policies that would ensure successful expansion of Sealwrap into Asia and Europe Introduction Culture refers to the way of life that is influenced by the behaviour, knowledge, and beliefs throughout the lives of people. Multiplicity of cultures in a certain region or organization is referred to as cultural diversity. Multinational organizations have experienced cultural challenges while expanding their business to regions that differ culturally from the country of origin. The cultural challenges include different education system of the beneficiary country. The system of education may fail to produce experts to much the job specifications. However foreign government often give incentives to multinational organization that hire local expertise. Moreover, an organization is by far acceptable if it involve local employees. Organizations often find it challenging to penetrate and operate in a foreign market due to language barrier. The difference between the organizationââ¬â¢s official language and that of the country in which it is operating may require translators. Elsewhere, employees and managers may have to be trained. Other cultural barriers may included social inequalities and jealous, gender insensitivities, style of dress, mode of communication, national pride, religious belief and local customs. Organizations setting up their business across borders should appreciate cultural diversity both at the management and subordinate levels. Realizing and understanding cultures differences enhances human relation in an organization. The differences are addressed through an effective communication system. Managers understand their employees and apply the best strategy to resolve employeesââ¬â¢ issues. As a suggestion, Sealwrap should consider involving more personnel of Asian and European when expanding their business in Asia and Europe respectively. It is advisable to involve these personnel at both the management levels and the subordinate levels. However, they must be trained accordingly. Elsewhere, in setting up the multinational in Asia, it is important to be flexible. The organization should consider allowing cultural norms that contribute positively to the organization to prevail. However these should be supplemented with professional management strategies. Suggested policies It would be important for Sealwrap executives, especially the human resources executives, to take on policies that curtail negative elements of the Asian and European culture while maintaining the positive ones. This would help in progression of the corporate culture in the Asians and European business operations. The policies should neither allow the corporate culture in the parent company to be adopted in the subsidiary nor should the Asian culture dominate in the operation of Sealwrap. A policy to maintain a higher percentage of the local employees would improve the outlook of Sealwrap as a local company. Employees should be encouraged to contribute ideas through a policy that reward them. Besides boost the employeeââ¬â¢s morale, the company would improve its outlook. The company could promote its business through a policy on corporate social responsibility. In conclusion, one important thing that Sealwrap could do is to set up a fair, open, and caring human resource system that would cater for the Asian and European cultures in their business at Asia and Europe. Consumer Spending in Asia free essay sample
Asia is the worldââ¬â¢s largest and most populous continent. Interestingly the countries which fall under Asia vary in size, environment, historical ties and governance systems. Thus the wealth of these countries differs quite drastically. For example in terms of Gross Domestic Product, GDP (the market value of all the goods and services produced by labour and property located in a countryâ⬠(About. com 2009)), Japan has the largest economy on the continent. In fact measured in terms of GDP Japan has the second largest economy in the world (Wikipedia 2009). Yet this is a far cry from other Asian countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh, where the annual turnover of some large Multinationals exceeds the national GDP. Unfortunately despite the fact that Asia accounts for roughly 60% of the worlds population (wikipedia 2009), it has been overshadowed (in economic terms) by the shear might and power of the western economies, namely America. However in a bizarre twist of fate, sparked by the now infamous credit crunch, which has had a devastating effect on the once robust economies of the West, many are now asking the question, can Asians replace Americans as a driver of global growth? (Economist June 2009). We will write a custom essay sample on Consumer Spending in Asia or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page These Asian countries or economies are often referred to as the ââ¬ËEmerging Marketsââ¬â¢. This definition is often widely used and loosely defined. The term ââ¬ËEmerging Marketsââ¬â¢ was first coined by by Antoine W. Van Agtmael of the IFC (International Finance Corporation) of the World Bank in 1981 (Heakal 2009). It is used to describe fast growing economies, which have embarked on economic development and reform programs (Heakal 2009). Thus they are considered to be transitional economies, as they are moving from a closed economy to an open economy, whilst importantly building accountability within the system (Heakal 2009). China and India are examples of two prominent ââ¬ËEmerging Marketââ¬â¢ Countries. Gone are the days these economies were ignored. The growing economic strength of these countries, one could go as far as to say may be seen as a threat to current international business. China and India use their generating wealth to actively compete with the West (Ashburton, 2006). For example, the take-over of Corus Steel by the Indian company, Tata made it the largest Indian take-over of a foreign company and the worldââ¬â¢s fifth largest steel firm (BBC News, 2006). Another example is of the Indian company Taj Hotels positioning itself as a global player as succeeding Four Seasons Hotels in operating as a New York City landmark. As many multinationals face domestic market saturation (Fenwick, 2001) they could undoubtedly benefit from accessing these huge markets. The purchasing power of China is greater than that of any other country in Asia, and the second largest in the world (Wikipedia 2009). However the economies of these ââ¬ËEmerging Marketââ¬â¢ countries vary considerably from the west in terms of culture and it has been argued that unlike countries in the West, individuals have a tendency to save rather than spend, thus have large current account surpluses. However the statistics tell a rather different story. ââ¬ËIn China, India and Indonesia spending has increased by annual rates of more than 5% during the global downturn. Chinaââ¬â¢s retail sales have soared by 15% over the past yearââ¬â¢ (Economist 2009) . These are phenomenal numbers. This includes government spending thus does overstate the numbers, however according to official household surveys, the percentage increase is in fact more in the region of 9%. This is highly impressive in comparison to the downturn in the west. Sales of cars have increased by a staggering 47%, clothes 22% and sales of electronics have increased by 12%. Ironically while car sales were up in Asia, the American taxpayers had to bail out the once massive Ford. However its not good news across all of Asia, spending has suffered as a result of increased levels of unemployment and lower wages in countries such as Hong Kong, South Korea, and Singapore. In these countries real consumer spending was 4-5%. Yet there are positive signs in countries such as Taiwan, where retail spending rose in May for the third consecutive month, that spending is beginning to increase. The fact remains, relative to American consumer spending, Asian consumer spending has soared (Economist 2009). However despite the strong growth and purchasing power of China, the fact remains that in dollar terms Chinaââ¬â¢s population spend 1/6th of that in America. This explains in part why the Chinese Government have taken such bold steps to boost consumption. For example they have made it easier to borrow, as well as issuing a number of subsidies for villagers, enabling them to buy vehicles and electronic goods such as TVââ¬â¢s, computers and mobile phones. This is a Government who wants its people to dig deep into their wallets and spend. Furthermore there are sufficient grounds for a positive outlook for the future. As incomes rise, this will no doubt have a positive effect on future sales. At the moment, only 30% of rural households own a refrigerator (compared with urban households). If the hopes of the governments in Asia are to be met, and consumer spending is to continue to soar, the answer lies in financing. The developed countries have a household debt to GDP ratio of around 100%, this is significantly higher than that of most Asian economies whose household debt is less than 50% of GDP. In particular in China and India, this is even lower at 15%. Interestingly the one exception to this is South Korea, where households have as much debt relative to their income as Americans. It seems the Chinese Government have plans in progress to tackle this. As in May this year the Chinese Bank, began planning legislation which will allow foreign institutions to set up consumer-finance firms, which will allow loans for consumer-goods purchases. However perhaps the biggest question is whether these governments will allow their exchange rates to rise, to allow the shift of balance between growth from exports to domestic spending. The rise in exchange rate would increase consumerââ¬â¢s real purchasing power and arguably more importantly give companies a reason to start producing goods for the domestic market. Unfortunately these governments have been reluctant to allow currencies rise too fast. Asian spending is without a doubt an important part of global growth. Surprisingly prior to the financial crisis which has hit the west, Emerging Asiaââ¬â¢s consumer spending contributed slightly more (in absolute dollar terms) to the growth in global demand than did Americaââ¬â¢s (Economist 2009). For a long time Globalisation and free markets, have been blamed for widening the gap between the rich and the poor. It has been argued markets create the ââ¬ËProgressive exclusion of the poorââ¬â¢ (Patnaik 2003 p. 62). Indeed there has been much research which has reached the conclusion capitalisation has been ââ¬Ëdominated by uneven development, in which divergence is the rule and convergence the exceptionââ¬â¢ (Weeks 2001 p. 28). Perhaps, and it is a big stretch at the moment, the latest developments indicate a shift to the once overlooked. However this pessimist cant help but feel, that these Emerging Market economies are far away from truly enjoying the fruits of their labour, and perhaps even much worse, they have only been given a taster, to something which will avail them until their governments wake up to the fact that rather than subsidising western consumers through undervalued currencies, they need to revalue the currencies.

Andrew Jacksons Big Block of Cheese
Andrew Jacksons Big Block of Cheese Popular legend contends that Andrew Jackson received a big block of cheese at the White House in 1837 and served it to guests at an open house. The incident achieved allegorical status during the run of the television drama ââ¬Å"The West Wingâ⬠and in 2014 it even inspired a dayà devoted to social media outreach from the Obama Administration. In reality, two early presidents, Jackson and Thomas Jefferson, received gifts of enormous blocks of cheese. Both gigantic cheeses were intended to convey a symbolic message, though one was essentially celebratory while the other reflected some political and religious squabbling in early America. Andrew Jacksonââ¬â¢s Big Block of Cheese The better-known enormous White House cheese was presented to President Andrew Jackson on New Yearââ¬â¢s Day 1836. It had been created by a prosperous dairy farmer from New York State, Col. Thomas Meacham. Meacham was not even a political ally of Jackson, and actually considered himself a supporter of Henry Clay, Jacksonââ¬â¢s perennial Whig opponent. The gift was really motivated by local pride in what was becoming widely known as the Empire State. In the late 1830s New York was prospering. The Erie Canal had been open for a decade, and commerce energized by the canal had made New York an economic powerhouse. Meacham believed making a mammoth cheese for the president would celebrate the regionââ¬â¢s spectacular success as a center of farming and industry. Before sending it to Jackson, Meacham exhibited the cheese in Utica, New York, and stories of it began to circulate. The New Hampshire Sentinel, on December 10, 1835, reprinted a story from a Utica newspaper, the Standard and Democrat: â⬠Mammoth Cheese - Mr. T.S. Meacham exhibited in this city on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week a cheese weighing 1,400 pounds made from the milk of 150 cows for four days at his dairy in Sandy Creek, Oswego County. It bore the following inscription: ââ¬ËTo Andrew Jackson, President of the United States.ââ¬â¢ â⬠He also exhibited a National Belt, got up with much taste, presenting a fine bust of the President, surrounded by a chain of twenty-four States united and linked together. This belt is intended for a wrapper to the mammoth cheese when presented to the President.â⬠Newspapers reported that Meacham had also made five other cheeses, each about half the size of the presidential cheese. They were intended for Martin Van Buren, a New Yorker who was serving as vice president; William Marcy, the governor of New York; Daniel Webster, the famous orator and politician; the U.S. Congress; and the legislature of the State of New York. Meacham, the intent of generation good publicity for his project, transported the enormous cheeses with great showmanship. In some towns, the enormous cheeses were paraded on a wagon decorated with flags. In New York City the cheeses were displayed to curious crowds at the Masonic Hall. Daniel Webster, while passing through the city, cheerfully accepted his great cheese from Meacham. The cheese for Jackson was shipped to Washington on a schooner, and the president accepted it at the White House. Jackson issued a letter of profuse thanks to Meacham on January 1, 1836. The letter said, in part: I beg you, sir, to assure those who have united with you in the preparation of these presents, in honor of the Congress of the United States and myself, that they are truly gratifying as an evidence of the prosperity of our hardy yeomanry in the State of New York, who are engaged in the labor of the dairy. Jackson Served the Big Block of Cheese The enormous cheese aged in the White House for a year, perhaps because no one really knew what to do with it. As Jacksonââ¬â¢s time in office was coming close to its end, in early 1837, a reception was scheduled. A Washington newspaper, The Globe, announced the plan for the colossal cheese: The New York present is nearly four feet in diameter, two feet thick, and weighs fourteen hundred pounds. It was transported through the State of New York with a great parade, to the place where it was shipped. It reached Washington accompanied with a splendidly painted emblematic envelope. We understand the President designs to offer this great cheese, which is finely flavored and in fine preservation, to his fellow citizens who visit him on Wednesday next. The New York present will be served up in the hall of the Presidents mansion. The reception was held on Washingtonââ¬â¢s birthday, which was always a day of celebration in early 19th century America. The gathering, according to an article in the Farmerââ¬â¢s Cabinet of March 3, 1837, was ââ¬Å"crowded to excess.â⬠Jackson, reaching the end of eight controversial years as president, was described as ââ¬Å"looking extremely feeble.â⬠The cheese, however, was a hit. It was very popular with the crowd, though some reports said it had a shockingly strong odor. When the cheese was served there arose an exceedingly strong smell, so strong as to overpower a number of dandies and lackadaisical ladies, said an article which appeared on March 4, 1837, in the Portsmouth Journal of Politics and Literature, a New Hampshire newspaper. Jackson had waged the Bank War, and the pejorative term Treasury Rats, referring to his enemies, had come into use. And the Journal of Politics and Literature couldnt resist a joke: We cannot say whether the smell of Gen. Jacksons cheese denotes that he goes out in ill odor with the people; or whether the cheese is to be considered as a bait for the Treasury Rats, who are to be attracted by its scent to burrow in the White House. A postscript to the story is that Jackson left office two weeks later, and the new occupant of the White House, Martin Van Buren, banned the serving of food at White House receptions. Crumbs from Jacksons mammoth cheese had fallen into the carpets and been trampled by the crowd. Van Burens time in the White House would be plagued by many problems, and it got off to a horrible start as the mansion smelled of cheese for months. Jeffersonââ¬â¢s Controversial Cheese The earlier great cheese had been given to Thomas Jefferson on New Yearââ¬â¢s Day 1802 and was actually at the center of some controversy. What prompted the gift of the mammoth cheese was that Jefferson, during the political campaign of 1800, had been harshly criticized for his religious views. Jefferson contended that politics and religion should remain separate, and in some quarters that was considered a radical stance. Members of a Baptist congregation in Cheshire, Massachusetts, who had previously felt marginalized as religious outsiders, were happy to align themselves with Jefferson. After Jefferson was elected president, a local minister, Elder John Leland, organized his followers to make a remarkable gift for him. An article in the New York Aurora newspaper on August 15, 1801, reported on the making of the cheese. Leland and his congregation had obtained a cheese vat six feet in diameter, and used the milk of 900 cows. When our informant left Cheshire, the cheese had not been turned, said the Aurora. But would be in a few days, as the machinery for that purpose was nearly completed. Curiosity about the enormous cheese spread. Newspapers reported that on December 5, 1801, the cheese had reached Kinderhook, New York. It had been paraded into town on a wagon. It was eventually loaded onto a ship which would carry it to Washington. Jefferson received the great cheese on January 1, 1802, and it was served to guests in the unfinished East Room of the mansion. It is believed that the arrival of the cheese, and the meaning of the gift, may have prompted Jefferson to write a letter to the Danbury Baptist association in Connecticut. Jeffersonââ¬â¢s letter, dated the day he received the cheese from the Massachusetts Baptists, has become known as the ââ¬Å"Wall of Separation Letter.â⬠In it, Jefferson wrote: Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man his god, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state. As might be expected, Jefferson was criticized by his very vocal opponents. And, of course, the mammoth cheese was drawn into the mockery. The New York Post published a poem making fun of the cheese and the man who cheerfully accepted it. Other papers joined in the mockery. The Baptists who had delivered the cheese, however, had presented Jefferson with a letter explaining their intent. Some newspapers printed their letter, which included the lines: The cheese was not made by his Lordship, for his sacred Majesty; not with a view to gain dignified titles or lucrative offices; but by the personal labor of free-born farmers (without a single slave to assist) for an elective President of a free people.

With an average price of $175 per person per day, todayââ¬â¢s Carnival Cruise Lines pricing continues to lead the other cruise lines in the industry which averages $235. The companyââ¬â¢s executives estimated that only 16% of North Americans had ever taken a cruise, hence a potential and significant market to explore. Proposing a Solution - Essay Example obe, with regard to the production of energy, its use as well as energy policies, are crucial determinants of sustainability of the present and future ecosystems and resources on the surface of the earth. Fracking presents a potential danger to the integrity of groundwater and ecosystem. The chemicals used in the fluid used for fracturing have the propensity to leak and contaminate groundwater. Besides, it has been pointed out by critics that fracking uses enormous amount of freshwater, which poses a big threat to the availability of freshwater for human consumption. The United States remains at a quagmire owing to the fact that natural gas is a crucial energy source in the country. This paper explores possible solutions to fracking, which is a threat to ecosystem and groundwater. Fracking also known as hydraulic fracturing refers to is used to extract natural gas from rocks by pumping pressurized chemical-laced water into a well to shatter the rocks. Critics assert that the consequences of Fracking (Hydraulic fracturing) far much outweigh its benefits. Fracking does not only produce natural gas, which is hazardous in terms of global warming, but also its environmental impacts raise eyebrows. It also imposes negative social impacts on the society. Fracking contributes to air pollution, water contamination as well as wastage (The Center for Media and Democracy). Fracking can weaken the ground and make it susceptible to earthquakes. This is a health hazard that must be well taken care of in order to prevent potential risks that come with drilling too many holes in an area. Fracking is a common practice in the oil and gas industry in the United States. Unit 8 Asignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Unit 8 Asignment - Essay Example Key players involved in investigating a disease outbreak includes local, state or federal agencies depending on the extent of disease spread and type of disease. Most diseases start at the local level and hence it is the primary duty of local agencies to initiate response. In case the diseases spread across states and nations, state agencies also gets involved in the response. Help from federal agencies such as CDC is sought when the diseases spread is huge or the disease is unusual. The basic step to initiating a disease response is joint collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). These agencies investigate the reasons behind a diseases outbreak, initiate steps to control and subsequently prevent it. This is done by food tests and inspection of food products and service quality at restaurants. Epidemiologist, Microbiologists, Environmental health specialists and regulatory compliance officers and inspectors make up a basic investigating team. Another important stakeholder is the Food industry. I personally feel that the food industry needs to comply strictly with food regulations s to prevent contamination of the food and subsequent outbreaks. Today food is not restricted to one place only, we engage in import and export of several food items which also raises concern in case such items are contaminated. In case of a diseases outbreak it become hard to pin point the cause and hence a series of steps is adopted to investigate the problem. After detection of the outbreak a cause is determines. A hypothesis is made after interviews are conducted with those involved in or witness to the outbreak. Laboratory tests are carried out and in case nothing is found the hypothesis is changes. However in case the findings are positive, point of contamination is investigated and a food is recalled. After recalling, if the disease is in control it is declared safe else the hypothesis is

Principles of Feng Shui
Principles of Feng Shui Feng shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy about how humans and their environments interact and have relationships. It encompasses the principle that everything has energy and is connected to everything else. It is stemmed in the belief that based on laws of nature, principles, theories and techniques we can understand how to create an environment that allows us to be in harmony and balance. It also can guide us to enhance certain areas of our lives. The basic principle of feng shui is chi or energy. It is a feng shui principle that is used through all of life. It links the energy of all things together. There can be chi or energy of earth, the atmosphere and people. We can see the quality of chi expressed through areas of color, form, shape, sound and the various cycles in nature. Feng shui principles work to ensure that the chi is allowed to keep flowing and not get stuck or depleted. In feng shui principles, there are two main types of feng shui that we need to consider. One of these is physical and contains the actual structures, surroundings, buildings, roads and design. The other involves directional influences that although are invisible, still have an influence on our lives and how we relate to space and time. We need to take both feng shui principles into consideration when evaluating the chi qualities of an environment. According to feng shui, if an area in the environment is not being conducive to providing good chi, there are cures or fixes that we can use to return the chi to a natural healthy state and continue to flow throughout the space. We can fix or correct the feng shui of an area by making small or big adjustments and applying feng shui techniques. These techniques incorporate the use of different elements to create balance and harmony.

The Importance of Misunderstanding in Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison Es
The Importance of Misunderstanding in Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison à In Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man, the main character is faced with challenges that he must overcome to survive. Most of the challenges he faces are straightforward; however, he ends up losing to his surroundings. When he makes a speech to calm a disorderly group, he ends up unwittingly naming himself their leader, thus, changing a slightly rowdy group into a mob primed for racial rioting. How can someone's speech be manipulated into having a meaning the complete opposite of the original intent? The Invisible Man's audience decides that they are only willing to listen to a speaker presenting what they want to hear. Due to a handicap of inexperience in public speaking, his effort to calm the crowd is used by the crowd, to forcefully name him the leading figure of an unreasonable mob. While walking down a New York street, the protagonist bears witness to the eviction of an elderly black couple from their home. While a Marshal conducts his job of ordering trusties to pile the couple's belongings on the sidewalk, a crowd gathers and watches in sympathetic disbelief. The Invisible Man becomes mixed in with the crowd and feels that the older couple is much like his own mother and father because they too are hard working and honest people. Soon after his realization, the woman being evicted becomes angry over the fact that she is unable to pray on the floor of her home. When she and her husband try to run past a defending trustee, the woman ends up falling backwards down her steps, which causes the spectators to become enraged. At this point, the Invisible Man becomes the center of attention when he rushes to the steps and makes a speech. His intentions... ...ed judgment and inexperience, he is unable to carry though with his original intentions and give rational judgment to the crowd. The misunderstandings that happen at the eviction shape the Invisible Man's future, causing a milestone in his life to be covered without even giving the least amount of effort. Irving Howe was right about stumbling to individuality; the Invisible Man's future is shaped by the wishful thinking of other people. Outcomes would have been vastly different had purposes been straightforward, actions been true, and emotions been clear; however, had conditions been better, the Invisible Man might have simply prompted serenity, or been the victim of a crowd turning against their leader. Philippe Halsman Essay
Philippe Halsman (2 May 1906 Riga, Latvia ââ¬â 25 June 1979, New York City) was a portrait photographer who made major contributions to the world of modern movement in photography as a fine art. Although Halsman studied electrical engineering, he took up photography as a profession. Halsman left Austria for France. There he began his career as a photographer to fashion magazines such as Vogue and soon became one of the most reputed portrait photographers in France. By 1936, Halsman became one of the leading portrait photographers. His repute lay in the use of sharp, dark images rather than soft and mellowed focus of the old school. When France was attacked during World War II, Halsman eventually migrated to U. S. A , and lived there till death in 1979. In America, Halsman stepped into the world of fashion photography when his image of model Constance Ford was used by the cosmetics firm Elizabeth Arden in advertising ââ¬Å"Victory Redâ⬠lipstick. Halsman could make a niche for himself in the photographs of the fashion magazines where his bold sharp portrait images could make a distinct departure from the earlier soft mellowed appearances. (PSGB, 1963) Halsman left his mark on fashion photography, through the many assignments that he took up over the years in various prestigious magazines; eventually he became the staff photographer for Life magazine, for which magazine he did more than one hundred covers, the first being the one portraying a model in a Lilly Dache hat. When Philippe Halsmanââ¬â¢s portrait appeared on the cover of Life in 1942, it immediately reached a huge audience and created a major uproar. When Halsman joined Life, the magazine was young, and photojournalism was a new field, waiting to be explored, and Halsman embarked on the task diligently with his acumen of creating bright, sharp images. One of Halsmanââ¬â¢s famous jump photos of Marilyn Monroe on the cover of Life magazine. (www. iphotocentral. com/â⬠¦ /256/Philippe+Halsman) The photos of Albert Einstein taken in 1947 went on to become one of the most famous ones taken by Halsman. During the photography session, Einstein shared with him his regrets about his involvement with the United States in pursuing the atom bomb. This portrait was later used in 1966 on a U. S. postage stamp and in 1999, on the cover of Time Magazine, when Time named Einstein the ââ¬Å"Person of the Century. â⬠(Boni, 1962) Apart from the freshness and the new technique that he brought to portrait and fashion photography, Philippe Halsmanââ¬â¢s contribution to the world of photography can be gauged in terms of the following focal areas: SURREALISM PSYCHOLOGICAL PORTRAITURE JUMPOLOGY SURREALISM: Though Philippe Halsman drew upon the works of surrealists, he could internalize the experiment within himself lending a distinctive edge to the evolving leitmotif, in terms of insertion of homely and uncannily disturbing details which held his subjects in a pictorial taut: his deep inroads into the surrealistsââ¬â¢ delving of the erotic unconscious had gelled into his subconscious, making him combine so delicately the ordinates of sex, glamour and heightened energy, so synergistically, in the individual portraits of such sensual idols as Merilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot. In fact, an eminently rewarding outcome of a long and enduring friendship that he shared with the noted surrealist, Salvador Dali for over 3 decades in the early 20th century was a series of tableaux like Dali Atomicus, exploring the playful fantasies of an artist, his canvas, a bucket of water, cats appearing in a suspended flux. Halsmanââ¬â¢s title of this photograph has indirect allusions to Daliââ¬â¢s work ââ¬ËLeda Atomicaââ¬â¢. visible at the right end of the photograph, behind the cats. The degree of Halsmanââ¬â¢s continuous striving for perfectionism can be gauged from one of his observations where he averred that he made 28 attempts before his final work could meet his stamp of approval. (ABC-CIS, 1976) Dali Atomicus (1948) by Halsman in an unretouched version, showing the devices which held up the various props and missing the painting in the frame on the easel. Another important collaborative effort between Dali and Halsman was seen in Voluptas Mors, a portrait of Dali near a verisimilitude of a skull composed of 7 interlocked nudes. Salvador Dali portrait, In Voluptas Mors (1951) In this joint effort Halsman assiduously exerted full 3 hours for arranging the models in terms of the sketch done by Dali. The posters for the films ââ¬ËSilence of the Lambsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËThe Descentââ¬â¢ made use of the photographic version of Voluptas Mors, though in fairly subtle and not so subtle modes. (T-L Books, 1977) The master of surrealism, Salvador Dali had shared an intimate chemistry with Philippe Halsman. Dali habitually visualised the problems of creating and presenting the depth and intricacies of surrealist art and Halsman almost always managed to resolve these problems for him. ââ¬ËVoluptas Morsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËDali Atomicusââ¬â¢ are only two examples of their collaborative endeavour that profoundly changed the outlook of the people towards photography as a form of fine art. Analysis of Television advertising Essays
Analysis of Television advertising Essays Analysis of Television advertising Essay Analysis of Television advertising Essay Advertising is a strong part of todays society whether it is for a product or charity. It appears everywhere from shop front windows, bus stops to the television. Advertising affects most people as it often affects what people wear, behave and purchase. By advertising a company can sell a product easily and soon makes it in fashion. Many adverts appeal to different people. One of the people who are most effect by advertising is teenagers and children. They feel the need to constantly improve their image and look good in front of their friends. In this essay I will be comparing two television adverts. The two adverts that I have chosen to compare are from two charities; Children in Need and Cancer Research. The first advert was shown on the night of Children in Need as a plea for money to go towards their charitable work. The second is shown regularly on Television is about Cancer Research and how they need donations to help people like you and me. Although these adverts are different they both portray similar techniques in order to get the audience to react. In this essay I shall look closely at both these adverts and highlight these similarities. In the advert from Cancer Research the story line is portrayed using flashbacks of two particular people. The first used is of a boy, getting ready for school, looking in the mirror whilst doing his tie up.Ã Whilst the boy is looking in the mirror, an image of what the audience presumes is his mum, appears. She is shown in the mirror to be behind the boy and says Dont forget your hankie in a very loving way. As the boy concentrates harder on the mirror this image fades and he stretches out his hand as a sign of sadness and longing for his mum. The second is of a mother in her bedroom with her daughter on the bed behind. She too is looking in the mirror, but getting ready to go out with friends. Her daughter says You look great mum. At this the mother realises how precious her daughter is to her and she gives her hug.Ã In the advert from Children in Need instead of a story line there is a statement asking for money. This advert consists of many children of a different race and background. It is shown as a plea in with each child saying a few words of this. The camera switches from one child to another in quick succession. In both of the adverts the main characters are children. In the advert from Children in Need children are the only people shown. However, in the Cancer research it features both mothers and their children. Each charitable advert gets across its message by using or showing pictures of the people it helps. In the Cancer Research advert a voice over is used. This is of an adult talking about how donations are needed to fund the charity. By using an adult it shows that Cancer Research helps both adults and children in work it does. In contrast the advert from Children in Need shows just children, as this is mainly the only people the charity focus on. Throughout both adverts repetitive Images are also used. This gives the charity greater credibility to the campaign and allows the audience to acknowledge/ remind them of something they have seen before. In the Cancer Research advert this techniques is used to show something from a different persons point of view. The first image is of a boy, looking in a mirror, remembering how precious his mum was to him. This is shown when an image of his mum appears and acts in an affectionate way, towards the boy. The second and the repetition is of a mother looking to into a mirror reminding herself of how much her daughter means to her. The Children in need advert uses the repetition of a black background to convey a particular message. The use of the same background, against each child who is talking, could suggest to the audience that each child they see is equal and deserves the same benefits.Ã By using repetition in an advert it allows the company or charity in this case to portray its message from different viewpoints and or reinforce this message.

Anarchism and the State Essays - Anti-fascism, Political Philosophy
Anarchism and the State Essays - Anti-fascism, Political Philosophy Anarchism and the State Anarchism and the State States have varied both historically and geographically such that for example David Held distinguishes between traditional states, feudal states, the polity of estates ,absolutist states and modern states while Richards and Smith distinguish between liberal states, social democratic states, collectivist states, totalitarian states and developmental states. Such distinctions are extremely important but I shall be concentrating in the following documents on the modern liberal democratic and social democratic states and later on important more recent changes in the nature of the modern British State. A very useful brief definition of the state has been provided by Andrew Heywood. He states that " the state can most simply be described as a political association that establishes sovereign jurisdiction within defined territorial borders and exercises authority through a set of permanent institutions. Using this definition let us isolate the key features of the state follows: 1.States aim to ensure that citizens comply with their laws and they may do so by engineering the consent of the citizens and or by the use of force. The monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force is central to Max Weber's definition of the state. He states that "a compulsory political organisation with continuous operations will be called a "state" insofar as its administrative staff successfully upholds the claims to the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force in the enforcement of its order." 2.It has also been argued by the French Marxist Louis Althusser that institutions such as the family, the church, the education system and the mass media should be seen as part of the state since they are ideological state apparatuses which function to legitimise the continued existence of the capitalist state. However other theorists would claim that these institutions are part of civil society rather than the State. 3.Modern states are organised on the basis of their Constitutions. A state's constitution may be defined as a system of rules and conventions by which the state is governed. Most importantly the Constitution specifies the relative powers of and relationships between the various political institutions of the state, most notably the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary and the rights and obligations of the citizen in relation to the state. Anarchism literally means without rule or without government. It has traditionally been associated with chaos, social disorder, destruction, violence and even terrorism. For example in the latter stages of the French Revolution the so-called Enrages who were critical of the Jacobin government for their failure to do more to help the poor and the disadvantaged were described by the government as anarchists in this pejorative sense and since then the word anarchist has often been used, particularly by moderates as a term of political abuse. However increasingly from the late C18th political theorists building on long standing political criticisms of authority developed an altogether more positive interpretation of the term anarchism. The case for Anarchism has come to rest essentially on the idea that political arguments in support of political authority and particularly arguments in support of the state are flawed. In the anarchist view the state does not guarantee social order, nor protect individual liberty, nor create the economic conditions for the improvement of working class life as conservatives, liberals and non-anarchist socialists would argue: rather the state constrains the individual and creates social disorder. Conversely the anarchists claim it is only individual freedom and the abolition of the state which will result in real human self-development and social harmony. To see this let us discuss the Anarchist logo. We must recognise that although the ideology of Anarchism contains important core elements there are also major divergences within this ideology. Anarchists are committed to the cause of individual liberty. They believe that individuals are the best judges of their own best interests and that they should therefore possess the high degree of liberty necessary to enable them to think and act as they see fit. The exercise of individual liberty will result also in social order and social harmony whereas if individuals are constrained by other individuals and organisations and especially if they are constrained by the State the result will be social disorder and social disharmony. All anarchists of all types are united

ART RESEARCH PAPER Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
ART - Research Paper Example The Institute bought the painting, and it is displayed till today. As a result of the competition, the painting started receiving its fair share of publicity by being featured in Chicago dailies. Its fame spread to Boston, Indianapolis, Kansas city and New York. The painting was received well in these cities and states as they saw it as a perfect representation of the state of Iowa (Hoving & Wood 14). Iowa residents, however, did not share the same sentiments as the other Americans. Iowans saw the American Gothic as a caricature depicting the wrong impression of life in their state. The painting depicted the as ââ¬Å"grim-faced puritanical Bible-thumpersâ⬠due to their conservative nature. In his defence, Grant Wood stated that the painting was a mere appreciation of the Iowan lifestyle (Evans 31). The painting was inspired by the lifestyle of the residents of Iowa and their simplistic view of life. The background of the painting was inspired by his travels of the Iowa landscape. Iowan residents found fault in the painting due to the house having unusual windows and being inspired by Gothic architecture. Gothic architecture, contrary to the picture, does not originate from America it is of European origin. The painting portrays a woman and a man standing side by side while the man holds a pitchfork. A house, constructed with Gothic architecture, stands behind the two. The man in the picture was Byron McKeeby, who was his dentist while the woman in the picture was his sister Nan (Hoving & Wood 7). The composition of the painting was new as the Gothic form of architecture was new in the Iowan landscape. The cast displayed in the picture was familiar to the American audience. The arched window believed to be from Sears, flourished the painting. The dentist looks directly at the audience while the woman stares at the other side of the painting. The woman deliberately fails to make eye contact

How To Build Your Own Computer Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
How To Build Your Own Computer - Term Paper Example For basic operation, minimum hardware configuration is required but for some special purposes hardware must be selected accordingly. This paper contains the procedure of building your computer according to oneââ¬â¢s own requirement. How to Build Your Own Computer A personal computer is not only utilized to surf the internet or check email but it is vastly used for other purposes like creating different software, run various programs and for maintain office documents and collecting information. Software is incomplete without hardware and in computers processor is the brain and heart of the system. Some people use a personal computer to play various games. A personal computer contains many parts that help run the processor and perform other functions. Processor and some other hardware components are mounted on a motherboard. All the hardware components are interfaced but utilizing a motherboard. A simple computer has a central processing unit (CPU) also known as processor, a random access memory (RAM), hard disk drive (HDD), compact disk drives (CD ROM) and DVD ROMs. Keyboard, mouse, scanners, camera and microphone are the inputs whereas monitor, printer and speaker are the output devices of a computer (Kitchen Table Computer ,2004). Designing your own computer, or even simply choosing the parts you want included in a custom build from a manufacturer, can prove to be quite difficult, or even impossible for an inexperienced computer user. I will attempt to demystify this process and provide guidance for an average, non-tech savvy person to define the intended purpose for their new computer and then select individual hardware components for purchase. We will start by deciding on the new computerââ¬â¢s intended use and then get right into the heart of the computer: the processor unit, memory (how much is right), hard disk drive (size and access speed), and other hardware components you can include in the computer proper. We will look at basic operating softwar e and then turn our attention to external devices, which can include items such as display devices, input devices (mouse/keyboard), printers, scanners, and external storage devices. Iââ¬â¢ll briefly touch on some easy to understand web sites for making your purchase, and finally, take a look at redundancy, or back-up options, you should consider in order to protect all of your precious data created or stored on your new computer. To begin with, let us consider some of the more common uses of computers today. There is a definite need for general-purpose home computers for activities as simple as using email, surfing the internet and storing and viewing pictures. Many people like to have a computer for simple office automation functions while others enjoy developing and hosting web sites for pleasure or small business opportunities. Another quite popular use is gaming, and in some niche communities, extreme gaming, for which expensive processors, graphics cards, maximum memory amou nts, and even special cooling systems are employed. And yet another use is for home entertainment, which may include streaming video directly to a display unit, downloading and storing media for later use, or even producing personal audio and video files for private use or sharing with friends and family. Some may classify the later into graphical arts studio work, but I personally reserve this category for people who use computers

Therefore, the paper will provide the architecture, module, and operation of the automated landscape topography device that will help the surveying operators to survey their field autonomously. The machine will collect the information and measure the size of the landscape. The machine will operate by closely monitoring the landscape where the land surveyors and the operators can mitigate the size of the landscape. The device will operate silently and take readings of the landscape on the specific monitoring points that are installed on the landscape. The device will take measurements on day to day basis and will detect errors that might occur on their reading. The information will then be sent to the project remotely. The equipment will need a power source and the operators will work hand in hand with the owners of the property on how the power outlet will be accessed. The reason behind implementing the system is to collect the information of a landscape and also measure the movement of the building and its landscape. The equipment will also closely monitor the landscape and the building and mitigate some of the potential damages that might occur on the landscape. The automatic device instrument will function by detecting the latitude and altitudes through various process. The detection of the energy that will be emitted will be important in coming up with topographical maps. However the device will only be able to detect a specific location that it will cover for the map. The efficiency of the device will vary from one instrument to the other. It is assumed that the device will only be able to see specific sections of the landscape. Therefore, it will be important to extrapolate the right landscape from the one that is tabulated. The device will also be in a position to measure the angle. The

Green Eyed Monster Essay Example for Free
Green Eyed Monster Essay As I got closer to the massive, muddy, mysterious green eyed monster, his one eye took the whole of his face. In the jungle of Africa where the atmosphere was silent, I heard a loud growl in the silent, small, smelly jungle. I never reacted to the loud growl. I thought it was a lorry or something but as I got closer to the monster, it had his gigantic mouth opened, as if it was a part of the jungle and it was camouflaged, so it would blend in with the trees of the jungle. This is a very famous place. People from all around the world have visited this mysterious jungle in Africa. I have read about this place, it is in the south of Africa, which has lots of gold, so many countries are linked to this continent. Why is it called the green eyed monster? My opinion on ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢why is it called a green eyed monsterââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ is that Itââ¬â¢s green and it only has one eye, which is very spooky, so it makes people who have not seen a one eyed monster before so it makes them want to see the green eyed monster. That is my opinion on why it is called a green eyed monster. The green eyed monster is about 5ft wide and 4ft long it has massive feet which are about 1.5ft wide and 1ft long and his one eye covers à ¾ of his face which is a lot of space. His huge eyes are filled with blood, which is dripping every second to the ground and it makes a really loud dripping noise. I could smell the sweat and the horrible smell of the green eyed monster I could also taste a horrible taste in my mouth which reminds me of a monster which has lived there for many years and hasnââ¬â¢t had a bath or a shower. I have read about the green eyed monster and the history of it is really interesting. It was used to carry 500 tonnes of gold in Africa many years ago. It was also used for public transport. It could carry 700 people to one place and back within 5 minutes, which normally, on a lorry or bus, it would take around 45 minutes. It would probably take the space of 20 football pitches but as we now know it would only take around 4 pitches due there being very less people ; the green eyed monster would have probably killed them or eaten them so I have read there are no people in the space of 400 miles. I have also read that there was a blue eyed monster and there are many rumours going around such as (the green eyed monster is the blue eyed monster but It hasnââ¬â¢t had anything to eat for 6 months so it turned blue due to the starvation.) I have also heard that green eyed monster had a son and it was called the blue eyed monster. As we can see the green eyed monster has only one eye therefore it has to be related to the blue eyed monster. As we got closer to the green eyed monster it had developed and made his growl louder and his mouth was shining so bright you could go blind looking at it for more than 5minutes. It was like seeing green stars and suddenly it collapsed and it was not breathing or growling, but I got closer and I couldnââ¬â¢t hear anything so there is no green eyed monster.

Movement in an Idealized Dam-break Configuration
Movement in an Idealized Dam-break Configuration For doing the research of the fluid dynamics with the open channel flow, to derive and understanding different waves equations in partial differential approximation with conservation form such as the explicit centered convection approximation and the explicit upwind convection approximation in different condition. Trying to substitutive the values into the equations to derive the appropriate method base on the finite- volume method in the fluid dynamics and using the software to calculate the flux and the stability which will depend on the direction of the wave and must be under the distance travel must not exceed the step way condition. The aim is staring to go through the details of the equations, get the brand new Flux functions which called lax Wendorff burgers equation scheme and Dam break scheme, based on those approximation to estimate the wave direction, wave speed, height, density and momentum in the certain and instant time for the water wave and at different conditions property and combinations. Putting the values to get the approximate results with those two methods and compare with each other. Plot the appropriate graphs. Abstract The purpose of this study is to model the flow movement in an idealized dam-break configuration. One-dimensional motion of a shallow flow over a rigid inclined bed is considered. The resulting shallow water equations are solved by finite volumes using the Lax-Wendroff schemes. At first, the one-dimensional model is considered in the development process. With conservative finite volume method, splitting is applied to manage the combination of hyperbolic term and source term of the shallow water equation and then to promote 1D. The simulations are validated by the comparison with flume experiments. Unsteady dam-break flow movement is found to be reasonably well captured by the model. The proposed concept could be further developed to the numerical calculation of non-Newtonian fluid or multilayers fluid flow. All the calculations, data and graphs represent are all through MATLAB programming with an individual code and all the units and symbols were labeled in the code. A. Units and constant for the approximations Equations Theory Partial Differentials Partial differential equations are complicated method to solve as they contain more than one variable and instead are used to Describe problems involving the parameters in use which can be solved using the variation of schemes. They describe the certain rate of change of variables which are related to each other, in this project, the first convection are the wave equation in conservation form which are to approximate the velocity of the flow in different directions and the flux approximation with changing time. Two different methods are considered which are the explicit upwind convection approximation and explicit centered convection approximation respectively. When dt = 0 and dx = 0, Discretization Schemes Explicit centered convection approximation and explicit upwind convection approximation, these methods include finite volume method which approximating the variables around discrete nodes with dissected into too many small elements that are approximated. Finite-Difference Approximation Finite-difference approximations are one of the most derivative methods for solving differential equations. The system can approximate the solution with the necessary boundary and initial conditions imposed, providing an accurate solution for the previous unfathomable equation. They are of particular use in aerodynamics as their time and space dependent nature lends itself to computing shock wave propagation or other energy transfer flows. Their approach uses discretization to approximate the differential, by applying a finite grid, of points at which the variables are estimated, with the process continuing as the local points govern their approximation values from the neighboring nodes. Iterative approximation in this manner produces an obvious error, known as the discretization or truncation error, diverging from the true value. The key to the principle is, like anything, minimizing this error in the system. Monitoring this error then is something of paramount importance and through the implementation of the Taylor Series. In addition, there are three critical properties that any approximation of a partial differential should maintain, which are consistency, stability and convergence. Forward-Time, Backward-Space Scheme The form of approximation method is a backward, explicit, hyperbolic system which means that at the next set of results are only calculated from the nodes immediately behind them geometrically, in relation to their pervious counterparts, for examples, When dt = 0 and dx = 0, This also gives the system an inherent advantage as this encourages convergence, through the fact that the approximation method has a domain of dependence which are include the initial data, shared by the partial differential at t = 0, only apply on the first set of data. Also, further information gathered from the equation itself shows is a first order method and most suitable to simple differential approximations. Lax Scheme This kind of approximations are most likely the previous is explicit hyperbolic in nature, however, it is a scheme which to demonstrated that all the velocity of the water flow terms are either side of and is first order accurate for u, and also approximate the accuracy for x. When dt = 0 and dx = 0, Moreover, the stability of the method has to be considered as the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition is a necessary condition for convergence while solving certain partial differential equations usually hyperbolic numerically by the method of finite differences. It arises in the numerical analysis of explicit time integration schemes, when these are used for the numerical solution. As a consequence, the time step must be less than a certain time in many explicit time-marching computer simulations, otherwise the simulation will produce incorrect results. Lax-Wendroff Scheme This scheme is a common numerical method for the solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations like the previous schemes which are based on the finite differences to accurate for both space and time apparently. There are two different cases are going to consider and approximate which are the 1st for the linear case, while , where a is a constant which to define the direction of the flow and u is the wave speed, when, the flow is to the right, and to the left when a is negative. As two different approximations have considered, for the centered method For the upwind method Or Or And for the Lax-Wendroff in first-order Predictor, Corrector, For the 2nd case, Centered method For the upwind method Or Or And for the Lax-Wendroff in first-order Predictor, Corrector, Calculate for the half grid points and time steps approximation as different predictors first and then recalculate the scheme by the value of half grid points and time steps into same Corrector which putting a two steps approximation rather than a single step to make it more accurate. This is a feature unique for the Lax-Wendroff method. Also, the stability of CFL condition is the same as the previous scheme. Taylor Series The Taylor series is a form of evaluating and representing partial differentials, as an infinite sum of its terms at a single point, in form of series expansion. The use of the series has many applications in engineering, with its main being the approximation of functions through the expansion to the necessary number of terms. Through collating the appropriate number of terms and then truncating the series a valid approximation of the function can be made. The act of truncating the series generates an error, although as the expansion continues the effect of each term dwindles, a characteristic that allows the truncation after a certain term number. The truncation error can also be computed and gives an indication as to the validity and performance of the initial approximation made using the series expansion. B. Dam break schme The simplest situations will first be considered, of mass, momentum and energy conservation laws in primitive form, so stripped of all energy-diffusing terms, such as bed slope , resistance, change of section. Governing Equations The mass entering t element in time dt is While the amount leaving is For the mass For the momentum For the simplest case, X1 Figures and Tables Figure 1 Figure 1 shows the relationship of the velocity against the postion of the flow in linear first-order which (f = a*u) , where a is 1, Lax-Wendroff is used for approximation, and it shows a steady flow with a certain time and positions with the input data, there are 50 nodes in total and the grid spacing are 400 as the detla time was 0.0015s, so the grid spacing should have to take a really large value to maintain the CFL. Figure 2 Figure 2 shows the relationship of the velocity against the postion of the flow in non-linear first-order which (f = u2/2), Lax-Wendroff is used for approximation, and it shows a steady flow with a certain time and positions with the input data, there are 50 nodes in total and the grid spacing are 30 as the detla time was 0.0015s, the grid spacing take a really smaller value to maintain the CFL. Figure 3 Figure 4 Figure 3 Figure 4 shows the relationship between the height against the spacing and the momentum against the spacing respectively, dam break scheme is used with base on a Lax-Wendroff approximation and for Figure 3, the running time is 10 seconds which is shorter then Figure 4 and the depth of the dam wall sets as 0.2m and break at 30m while Figure 4 sets as 0.5m depth and break at 50m. As the results show, the longer running time it takes, the stability and convergence of the approximation comes out. Also, both of the results withdraw the boundary which take an error while plot graph. So, a function for boundary condition has to be considered as well. References Guymon, Gary L. How To Listen To Music, Not Just Hear It Essay example -- essays resea
How to Listen to Music, Not Just Hear it à à à à à To learn to listen to music, not just hear itYou need the right room, the right equipment, the perfect volume, the perfect spot, and (of course), the embracing of the music. After you have all the proper tools, you can sit and enjoy the music. The first consideration is to listen to music in a comfortable chair. I would highly recommend a good quality Lazy Boy recliner. Now, you need to find the best room to put that chair in, so you can listen to you music. The room can be any normal room with four walls but, the room can't be wide open. For example, it can't be an unfinished basement with concrete walls and a cement floor. The sound will not be able to bounce off the walls and give the effect as if the sound is coming from behind you, as well as in front of you (the surround effect). A good room to listen in, is a typical family room with sheet rock walls and four ninety degree corners. The second consideration is placement of speakers. The corners of a room are the perfect spot for your speakers. You shouldn't position them flush against the wall, but put the back of the speaker into the corner, so each side of the speaker is against each wall. For this reason, the bass is extended (louder), and the tweeters, mid-range, and woofers give you their undivided attention. Where to sit is simple, but it takes some easy calculations to find the perfect spot. There is a common rule for a person to experience...

History of Optometry Essay
Optometrist is the kind of doctor who makes sure that a personââ¬â¢s eyesight is functioning well and that there are no harmful diseases slowly emerging that may later on affect the sight of a person. They are in charge examining a patientââ¬â¢s eyes and gives prescription if it is needed. Like any other healthcare profession, an optometrist should and must have a certification which is a basic requirement before they practice their profession. Optometry is a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated, and regulated (licensed/registered), and optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system. (World Council of Optometry) However, there is a little knowledge about optometry and the emergence of optometrists. It is always associated with medicine, microbiology and physiology to name a few. There is no exact date or specific person who explored on the topic. But in 1886, the term ââ¬Ëoptometristââ¬â¢ was coined by Landolt which means, ââ¬Å"Glass fitterâ⬠or someone who makes and prescribe eyeglasses. Prior to this, there are already persons who call themselves ââ¬Ëopticiansââ¬â¢. Prior to this, there was a distinction between ââ¬Å"dispensingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"refractingâ⬠opticians in the 19th century. The latter were later called optometrists. (David Goss, History of Optometry, Lecture Handout, Indiana University School of Optometry, 2003) Before, the opticians are those who make glasses for a person but do not exactly know if that pair of glasses will fit the person or not. Or if that pair is the one that will help a person correct his eyesight. More, in the United States, the first school of optometry was founded sometime 1850-1900. Also, in 1940, the use of contact lenses was first established. The development of optometry in the US started way back 1600ââ¬â¢s, where the first person to own glasses, Peter Brown who is a Pilgrim introduced the use of such device during the time when there are only a handful of people who knew about the said product. It is said that Peter Brown, a Pilgrim, brought a pair of eyeglasses to North America in 1620 and thus became the first to wear glasses on this continent. There is little known about the use of spectacles in North America for more than another hundred years. (David Goss, History of Optometry, Lecture Handout, Indiana University School of Optometry, 2003) At the onset of the 17th century, there were a number of American optometrists who came to the country to practice the profession. And since the Spectacles then were very expensive, this group of optometrists introduced better and more correct glasses that should be used by the people. Other notable early American optometrists were Benjamin Pike, who came to the US in the early 1800s, and James Prentice, who came to the US in 1847. They both were trained in optics in England, and they both trained their sons. Jamesââ¬â¢ son, Charles Prentice, would have an important role in the development of American optometry. (David Goss, History of Optometry, Lecture Handout, Indiana University School of Optometry, 2003) On the other hand, not all diseases that concern the eye can be cured by an optometrist. Eyesight disease such as macular degeneration or the breakdown of a certain part of the retina to be able to see things clearly, cannot be treated by an optometrist. Rather, the ophthalmologist is the one responsible for its cure. Another is the Diabetic Retinopathy which is sometimes an indication for having diabetes. It is a kind of illness where the retina is being blocked by masses of blood clots that cause irregularities in a personââ¬â¢s eyesight. The most well-known disease that concerns the eye is the cataract ââ¬â which the optometrist cannot cure as well. It is the work of the ophthalmologist to perform. They are the ones who prescribe supplements, vitamins and other needed medication to the patient. Sometimes, they also perform the surgery to remove the cataract. Among the many diseases that concern the eye, these are the few which is directly handled not by an optometrist but an ophthalmologist. Other diseases such as glaucoma, near/far sightedness can be treated by either an ophthalmologist or an optometrist.

pablo essays
pablo essays Pablo Neruda starts his 1971 Nobel Lecture Towards the Splendid City, stating, so remote are we Chileans that our boundaries almost touch the South Pole, and continues by speaking of the, vast expanses in my native country, most specifically his journey across, the Andes to find the frontier of my country with Argentina, (Neruda 1). In his narration of this journey Neruda comes into contact with, seasoned country folk, in which he describes a personal experience that allows him to realize that perhaps they share the, same kind of dreams, and, there were hidden things that were understood, (Neruda 2). In this story he is seeking to depict the commonalities of humanity especially when encountering the harshness of nature. He then goes on in his speech to state that he, did not learn from books any recipe for writing a poem, and I, in my turn, will avoid giving any advice on mode or style which might give the new poets even a drop of supposed insight, (Neruda 4). He expresses that during the long journey he achieved the necessary tools for writing a poem, from the earth and from the soul, (Neruda 4). He states he believes, that poetry is an action, ephemeral or solemn, in which there enter as equal partners solitude and solidarity, emotion and action, the nearness to oneself, the nearness to mankind and to the secret manifestations of nature, (Neruda 4). Through the framework of this specific journey in the Andes, Neruda speaks of the creation of his poetry and says, I do not know whether I experienced this or created it, I do not know whether it was truth or poetry, something passing or permanent, the poems I experienced in this hour, the experiences which I later put into verse, (Neruda 5). The poet goes on to say that his journey is not unlike all the journeys of life and that all paths of humanity lead to the s...

Salary Negotiation Skills for Women Close the Pay Gap! Part 2
Salary Negotiation Skills for Women Close the Pay Gap! Part 2 Salary Negotiation Skills for Women: Close the Pay Gap! Part 2 Last week, I wrote about the importance of salary negotiation skills for women in my article, Salary Negotiation for Women. In it, I drew from information presented in a webinar by Professor Deborah Ellis that emphasized how salary negotiation skills can help close the gender pay gap. I promised last week to share more about specific salary negotiation skills. Following are some of the issues you might run into and how salary negotiation skills can help you address them. What if youââ¬â¢re asked about your prior salary or salary expectations at any point in your job search? Some employers try to get you to state a number before they do, which is in no way a good thing for you. A low number sets you up to be underpaid by some organizations, and a high number sets you up to be eliminated from consideration. Knowing how to answer the salary expectation question is hugely important for women so that they get paid fairly, not based on a previously too-low salary. Hereââ¬â¢s how Professor Ellis recommends responding if youââ¬â¢re asked about your salary expectations or previous salary: If youââ¬â¢re in California, Massachusetts, Delaware, or Oregon, or in the cities of New York City and Philadelphia, you can explain that there are laws stating you are not required to answer it. These laws are a great step toward ending pay discrimination. For instance, say, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure that if you decide Iââ¬â¢m the best candidate for the job, we can agree on an appropriate salary for the position.â⬠Or ask them ââ¬Å"What is the range that youââ¬â¢re thinking of for the position?â⬠Show them youââ¬â¢ve done your research. Say, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve done some research and understand that the range for this position is $X to $Y. I trust you will offer a fair salary based on industry standards.â⬠If you must state a number, state a range. Or ask for a number at the top of the range youââ¬â¢ve researched, and explain youââ¬â¢re hoping for that salary but are willing to negotiate. Once you get an offer, here are Professor Ellisââ¬â¢s tips on how to negotiate effectively: Do not initiate a salary negotiation conversation before you get a job offer. Do not ask in your initial phone interview about salary, benefits, or working from home. Wait until youââ¬â¢ve been offered a position before you bring up any of these issues. Otherwise you will be seen as immature at best, and greedy at worst. You wonââ¬â¢t get a second interview. Be prepared. Before you step into a negotiation, calculate your target, your ask, and your bottom line. Gather as many objective facts as possible, including the salaries of others. There are two main ways to do your research: Surf the web. Use salary.com, glassdoor.com, and industry-specific websites. Ask your networks (including LinkedIn!). If youââ¬â¢re a woman, ask your colleagues what a man would ask to be paid for this job. If you want to work from home, find out ahead of time whether other people in similar positions have worked from home. Ask for up to 20% over your target. And donââ¬â¢t accept anything below your bottom line. Negotiate the total package just salaryââ¬âkeep salary and benefits, title, scope of responsibility, travel, flexibility, and resources to accomplish your job on the table. Asking for more than one thing allows you to trade off. Keep in mind that some benefits might be non-negotiable, and do not push on those. Note: If youââ¬â¢re asking for multiple things, let the employer know at the beginning of the conversation- and ask them in what order they would like to address those things. Understand and leverage the concept of anchoring. Hereââ¬â¢s how anchoring works: The first number anyone says is the number that everyone will remember. So donââ¬â¢t say a low number first or youââ¬â¢ll be stuck with a low number! Start with a high number and then anything else will sound smaller. If you have another offer, thatââ¬â¢s a great benchmark and bargaining point. Always be conversational and pleasant while youââ¬â¢re advising a potential employer of other offers! Identify employerââ¬â¢s interests. For more good advice on this strategy, read Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In, by Roger Fisher, William Ury, and Bruce Patton. Ask for time to consider an offer if you need it. If a company wants you, theyââ¬â¢ll be willing to wait- whether thatââ¬â¢s overnight or even a week or two, depending on the situation. Practice with peers or a professional interview coach- and then go negotiate! How can I learn more about salary negotiation and salary negotiation for women? Here are some great resources suggested by Professor Ellis: AAUW, American Association of University Women Babcock Laschever, Ask For It: How Women Can Use the Power of Negotiation to Get What They Really Want (2009) Babcock Laschever, Women Donââ¬â¢t Ask: The High Cost of Avoiding Negotiation- and Positive Strategies for Change (2007) Roger Fisher, William Ury, Bruce Patton, Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In (1991) If you are a woman (or a man) with an upcoming interview, try using some of these salary negotiation skills, strategies and tactics. Iââ¬â¢d love to hear the results!

Eugenics of Darwinism Essays
Eugenics of Darwinism Essays Eugenics of Darwinism Essay Eugenics of Darwinism Essay Eugenics of Darwinism In 1883, shortly after the abolishment of slavery, Francis Gallon, a cousin of Charles Darwin, expanded on Darnings theories of evolution to create a concept he called Eugenics. Eugenics is the thought that genetics and race determine intelligence, social behavior, disease, poverty and other things including characteristics such as feeble-mindedness. This belief would be used to exterminate masses of people throughout history. Many social elite around the globe accept this belief as truth and supported it whole-heartedly by funding much of the research and practices or by miming to the defense of those whom decided to use Eugenics to Justify their horrific actions. The documentary Racism a History produced by BBC details a history leading up to the development of Eugenics and then the use of Eugenics to Justify the elimination and population control of several groups of people deemed by believers of the concept to be expendable in order to preserve the fittest race. Survival of the fittest. In 1803 the British settled in Tasmania, Australia. The indigenous people of Tasmania were the aboriginal tribe. The settlers would kill an aboriginal any time they came across one. However, a missionary named George Augustus Robertson was hired to capture the indigenous people and try to civilize them according to the norm of British society instead of killing them. He convinced 300 aboriginals to move to a new settlem ent he called Point Civilization so that he could turn them into proper Christians. By the middle sass about 260 of teethe had died of exposure to disease brought by the Europeans. This fate would lend support to Darwinism and eventually Eugenics on the matter of natural selection (survival of the fittest species). Killings continued in several other countries where many other indigenous people would perish by the actions of Europeans. All would be Justified by scientific racism like Eugenics. One of the most profound Justifications the documentary uses to display this White European mindset of a favored race happened in the sass. India was under British rule and the country had climate change due to El Ion that would cause a depletion of crops. The British Raja sat back and let over 30 million Indian people die from starvation and Justified his inaction by not wanting to interfere with the natural selection. In 1904 in a colony of Germany located in Iambi, Africa, the indigenous people rebelled against the Germans. This led the Germans to build the first concentration camps. Shark Island is where one of these concentration camps was located. It is stated that every African that went to Shark Island knew they would die there. Thousands of Africans lost their lives via the Germans there. Some refer to this as the Black Holocaust. During the early sass, the United States was experiencing a massive influx of immigrants. Many in the US were concerned that this immigration combined with the abolishment of slavery would lead to racial mixing and would threaten the survival of the superior race. The Eugenics Records Office was formed. The office was run by Charles Davenport. During this venture, sterilization of the lower genetic p ool was conceived as well as marriage laws that restricting interracial marriages and forced sterilizations of several citizens deemed genetically deficient were performed. Some sterilizations were even preformed on hillier as young as 10. Germany saw what the Americans were doing and not only applauded the attempts to eradicate the weaker genetics but also adopted the sterilization process. The American Rockefeller foundation funded the building for the German Eugenics facilities. Placed in charge of the facility was Eugene Fischer whom had earlier studied the racially mixed people of Reboot in Africa concluding that racial mixing is bad for the white race because the African traits show dominance in the offspring. At the German facility, Fischer was in charge of the theorization of 400 racially mixed children. Soon the German facility moved onto gassing over 70000 mentally ill and when they ran out of mentally ill subjects, they gassed over 15000 that were considered sick. Some of these people were labeled as sick merely because they wore glasses. These actions would lead to the mass genocide of the Jewish people via Hitler. While Germany, Britain and the United States were large contributors to the atrocities linked to Eugenics, other countries also supported the movement including Sweden which sterilized over 60000 people u to race or mental illness. However, it was hard for a people that were poor, uneducated and it is probably safe to assume, non-violent to fight against Eugenics when it had such noted and powerful supporters such as Winston Churchill, Charles Dickens, Charles Kinsley, George Bernard Shaw, H G Wells and Margaret Ganger Just to name a few. The many stories of Eugenics seem hidden away from history, lost in the shadows of the Jewish Holocaust. These recollections of history cant and shouldnt stay hidden. I find this documentary to be very informative and reliable. I would recommend it to a friend and also use it as an instructional aid. The reasons why I would do this are because the video gives a new perspective of global interest in race relations during the times leading up to the holocaust and lends to several questions regarding why the murders of so many blacks and mentally ill were swept under the table never to be discussed while pretty much everyone knows about the Jewish Holocaust. I rate this video a 4. 5 out of 5. I would give it a perfect 5 but I feel they had to edit content out due to time limits.
