Compare / Contrast Two Comedians From Two Different Era (Essay Sample) Content: DICK GREGORY VERSUS TREVOR NOAHNameInstitutionIntroductionDick Gregory and Trevor are two comedic stars who have reached the prime of their careers and managed to be influential figures universally. Both being comedians of black origin and having experienced a life of hardship under the white man, Dick Gregory a victim of a race that underwent slavery and the complicated history of black America and Trevor Noah a victim of Apartheid, have most of their works dwelling on political instability and modern day slavery. Sometimes they reference to the past events of oppression from the white man. The lives of the two are marked with close to similar events that make their history almost the same but they also have had different paths that make them the different people they are and had them mark different niches in the same field.BodyThe two have always used their celebrity status to address several politically based injustices such as Trevor Noahs address on the unfairnes s of deporting Mexicans and other foreigners from America. He also addresses the issue of the building of the wall on the Mexican border to stop the Mexicans from getting into America. On the side of Dick Gregory, he used his influence to mobilize actions to support some causes such as the parade against the Vietnam War, World hunger and Drug abuse. The two have their comedy based on truthful matters. They do not derive jokes from unrealistic things but their jokes are actual things happening but they tell them in satirical manner that at a point Dick Gregory was named the Black Mort Sahl after a famous white satirist. As they have risen, they have replaced people in the places they have worked and were found to fit those places better. This has had them secure the jobs for a long span of time. In his early days, Dick Gregory replaced a white comedian known as professor Irwin Corey in the Chicagos Playboy Club with a request from the publisher Hugh Hefner. Although he had only perfor med to only black audience, he was able to win over a huge white audience that night despite their inclination to the traditional southern white comedy. (Bruce. (2009 March 13)). His success led to something that the owner of the club had not purposed for. He was able to secure a three years contract from a two weeks one. Trevor Noahs move from South Africa to America was a door opener for him. He became a regular contributor to the scripting of the program The Daily Show with 200 scripts to his name. Jon Stewart then selected him as the replacement of him as the shows host. Even though Trevor Noah is a foreigner, he has been able to take up the role of the host of the political satire program that concerns a foreign country so well that he Jon Stewart has had him retain the role as the host. Jesse. ((2012 June 18)).The two have had transitions in different jobs before they decided to settle for comedy, which they are more successful at doing. Dick Gregory was a poorly performing ki d in school such that what had him going was his athletic prowess. He got scholarships until university but he quit school saying that they made him run at school something that he did not want. He then joined a group of black comedians in Chicago and this is where his career as a comedian started. He has been an occasional actor, makes appearances in television and television programs and was a radio co-host but he remains to be mainly a comedian. (Bruce. (2009 March 13)). Trevor Noah started out as a soap opera actor in South Africa and then moved on to be a radio host of his own show Noahs Ark. He quit the radio-hosting job to concentrate on being a comedian full time. Their choice to have comedy as their full time careers became possibly the best choice they have ever made concerning their career lives.Even though the two seem to have taken almost the same paths in life, they have a distinct difference to them that makes them stand out and possibly attract a differing kind of au dience. For instance, Trevor is a new school comedian whilst Dick Gregory has traversed from his old school era and has been able to appeal to the new school. Dick Gregory started his career at a time when white people could only listen to white entertainers but still was able to overcome this obstacle. Trevor Noah has risen at a time when racism is a minimalistic case. He can address both the white and black audience without race being an obstacle he has to beat to pass his jokes.Trevor Noahs authorship has little to mention to it. Apart from his scripting of programs contents, there is only one book, Born a Crime that speaks of a childhood experience during the apartheid period. In this book, he talks about his life and as we expect, there is humor and comedy. He speaks of the imprisonment of his mother due to her relations with a white man and the moving of his father back to his homeland because of his relations with a woman of African descent. He speaks of his childhood abuse i n this book too. Dick Gregory on the other side has some bestselling books to his name. One of them being the number 1 bestselling Nigger which he tells his mother that whenever she hears someone saying the word nigger, she should know that those saying it are advertising Dick Gregorys book. This book he wrote some time just before the assassination of President Kennedy. Besides Nigger, he has other books to his name and they include: * Write me in! Bantam, 1968. * From the Back of the Bus * What is happening? * The Shadow that Scares Me * Dick Gregory's Bible Tales, with Commentary, a book of Bible-based humor * Dick Gregory's Natural Diet for Folks Who Eat: Cookin' With Mother Nature! * (with Shelia P. Moses), Callus on My Soul: A Memoir. * Up from Nigger * No More Lies; The Myth and the Reality of American History * Dick Gregory's political primer * (with Mark Lane), Murder in Memphis: The FBI and the Assassination of Martin Luther King * (with Mel Watkins), African American Humor: The Best Black Comedy from Slavery to Today (Library of Black America) * Robert Lee Green, Dick Gregory, daring Black leader * African American Humor: The Best Black Comedy from Slavery to Today (editor) * "Not Poor, Just Broke", short story * Callus on My Soul, (Longstreet Press, Atlanta, Ga.)While Trevor Noah started his career at the age of 18, Dick Gregory had his entertainment career started in the year 1954, which was the year when he was 22. Both are still active but it is obvious that Dick Gregory has dwelt for a longer time in the field as compared to Trevor Noah who at times seeks the mentorship of Dick Gregory basing his reason to the fact that Dick has more experience in the field. An obvious difference is their era of work. Dick Gregory was a renown comedian in the 20th century, Not only was he a comedian but also an activist who spearheaded demonstrations like those against the Vietnam war where he even took a hunger strike losing weight to an extreme of weighing only 100 pounds. He was also an active participant in feminism movements. He has also been a friend of great historical political figures such as President Kennedy. Trevor Noah on the other side is a 21st century comedian. He has started and risen to the heights of his career in the 21st century with the factor of his birth parents being an interesting factor. His mother is a South African and his father a man of Swiss-German decent. In his childhood, both his parents could not walk with him hand in hand due to his skin color. It was during the apartheid and walking with him could place either his mother or father in the danger of going through torture. He has taken part in charity activities and his political contributions are made only in the form of satire in his comedic shows. The two have had very different jobs before comedy, which they are more successful at doing. Dick Gregory was not educational talented but athletically was a gem on every institution he was in a nd for this reason he went up to University of Illinois no matter his performance in written tests . (Bruce. (2009 March 13)). He however did not finish school but that has not blocked him from being the successful person he is. His decision to join other black comedians in Chicago was a decision that was about to see him reach heights no one who had observed his school performance believed he was going to reach. No one believed that a person of such class performance could deliver intelligent jokes and satirical jokes. He has interacted with the crme de la crmes of education, blended in with them so well, and proved that education is not the only way to prove ones intelligence. He has been able to thrive in other fields too such as in entrepreneurship, conspiracy theory making, social criticism, civil right activism and acting. Trevor Noah has no history of being a student with problems in his education. He however has a quitting incident where he quit the radio-hosting job to co ncentrate on being a comedian full time. He has also thrive in other fields too such as being a writer, both script for TV and film and now a book. Their choice to have comedy as their full time careers became possibly the best choice they have ever made concerning their career lives.Trevor Noahs early life was filled with child abuse. His stepfather abused Trevor Noahs mother and Trevor Noah himself. Frequent reports concerning the abuse went unattended to by the police officers that were reported. Trevor Noah himself says that cases were ditched and never taken to court. The Significance Of Act 1 Scene 1 free essay sample

Of King Lear Essay, Research Paper The Tragedy of King Lear- The importance of act 1 scene 1 William Shakespeare, the greatest dramatist the universe has of all time seen renowned for his ability to portray highly realistic characters and the poetic poetry that fills his dramas. His dramas have been classified into three chief classs the calamities, the comedies and the historic dramas. Of his calamities the drama that left the most impact on a spectator was, in my sentiment King Lear. The drama was likely performed in the Globe foremost, but the first recorded public presentation was in the tribunal of King James I in 1606 on St. Stephens # 8217 ; s twenty-four hours. There seems to be an sarcasm behind this, since St. Stephens # 8217 ; s twenty-four hours is a festival in the Christian calendar that stressed the folly and sophistication of adult male, which is precisely what Shakespeare attempts to make through King Lear. There is some contention as to the existent occurrences towards the terminal of King Lear # 8217 ; s life. One theory of Geoffrey of Monmouth is that King Lear after being stripped of all his rights by his senior girls flees to France after which he is restored as King and Cordellia becomes his replacement. Other theories include the self-destruction of Cordellia, but Shakespeare # 8217 ; s rule beginning for the drama was # 8220 ; The history history of King Lear # 8221 ; . Other possible influences for the drama could hold included the common people narrative of Cinderella and the Salt and the narrative of Agamemnon and Iphegenia, both which trade with Parent kid relationship # 8217 ; s which is one of King Lear # 8217 ; s of import subjects. King Lear is more than the narrative of a Monarch and his divided kingdom ; it deals with the facts of life and jobs blighting parent kid relationships which more than of all time hold relevancy to present times. The first scene of the drama thrusts the audience into the secret plan with its fast development. Kent # 8217 ; s really opening line is a foreteller to conflict between the Dukes of Albany and Cornwall when he speaks of the male monarch preferring Albany to Cornwall. The conversation that follows between Kent and Gloucester about Lear aid uncover the capriciousness and unreason of Lear. The undermentioned lines spoken by Gloucester uncover the subject of parent kid relationships when he speaks of his # 8220 ; bastard boy # 8221 ; Edmond he says # 8221 ; I have so frequently blushed to admit him, that now I am brazed to # 8217 ; t # 8221 ; . He subsequently refers to him as # 8220 ; Whoreson # 8221 ; . The alteration in linguistic communication used after the reaching of King Lear from colloquial to versify shows today # 8217 ; s reader the structured society of that period and the importance of a King and Kingship on the whole. King Lear # 8217 ; s opening address further reveals his unreason a nd eccentricity portraying him as narcissistic and egoistic. What kind of a male parent would inquire three of his girls to # 8220 ; state doth love us most # 8221 ; to inherit wealth or lands? Gonerill reaction is # 8216 ; excessively good to be true # 8217 ; . She speaks in Hyperbole, which illustrates her shallowness to all except King Lear who is blinded by his self-importance and self-deceit, which does non let him to comprehend the truth. Gonerill # 8217 ; s address depicts herself as a crisp individual who can easy pull strings linguistic communication for her convenience. The lines # 8220 ; I love you more than word can exert the affair # 8221 ; demo these features. Regan speaks genuinely when she says ; # 8220 ; I am made of that self-mettle of my sister # 8221 ; . Her lines portray her as 1 who lives in Gonerill shadow and one who follows her senior sister, particularly in her otiose and shallow character. As her sisters are occupied showing unreal love for their male parent Cordellia, one who truly loves her male parent is lost and doesn # 8217 ; t cognize what to make. This is apparent in what she utters aside phrases like # 8220 ; Love, and be soundless # 8221 ; and # 8220 ; I am certain my love # 8217 ; s more heavy than my lingua # 8221 ; . Both quotation marks are directed towards avoidance of Regan and Gonerill # 8217 ; s reaction to King Lear. King Lear reference to Cordellia # 8220 ; What can you state to pull a 3rd more deluxe than your sisters # 8221 ; show that he is already colored towards her, cognizing that she loves him most. This is perchance a ground why the senior sisters do non love the male monarch, since he has shown bias towards Cordellia throughout the Ir childhood. Cordellia effectual response â€Å"Nothing† to King Lear’s inquiry strikes the King’s self-importance and he refuses to listen to all ground, even when she points out â€Å"Why have my sisters hubbies, if they say They love you all? # 8221 ; When Lear disowns Cordellia his most loyal topic and friend Kent tries to open his eyes to the truth. Kent reacts to Lear # 8217 ; s # 8220 ; Come non between the firedrake and his wrath # 8221 ; by stating Lear to look into his # 8220 ; horrid heedlessness # 8221 ; . This exposes the fact that Kent is highly close to Lear to be able to utilize such linguistic communication and tone of voice with him, after all he is still King. Kent still attempts to blossom the truth to Lear as says # 8220 ; See better Lear # 8221 ; but Lear # 8217 ; s madness doesn # 8217 ; t let Kent to win and Lear banishes Kent. After which he calls on Burgundy and France to inform them of the occurrences. Burgundy reacts by rejecting the # 8220 ; dowerless # 8221 ; Cordellia. France on the other manus shows penetration and excepts Cordellia depicting her as # 8220 ; Fairest Cordellia, that art most rich being hapless, Most pick forsaken, and most loved detested # 8221 ; This signifier of address where antonyms are used as contradictions is known as Oxymoron. From this scene a analogue can be drawn between Gonerill, Regan and Burgundy as otiose characters, shallow human existences marred by greed and a lecherousness for power. This scene chiefly serves as an debut to each character. It introduces Kent as loyal and more rational than Lear. It introduces Gloucester as a adult male affected by the worldly and physical facets of life. Not much can be inferred of Edmond other than the fact that his relationship with his male parent does non look to be one of love and filial devotedness, and Gloucester does non give their relationship any ground to be so as he repeatedly insults his asshole boy. The three girl # 8217 ; s characters are exposed. Gonerill appears to be tyrannizing, otiose and shallow and Regan is portrayed as a follower of her sister. Cordellia is viewed as the ever-loving girl who will non crouch to the degrees her sisters have, since h er love can non be expressed in words. Her reply to the King # 8220 ; Nothing # 8221 ; is so much more effectual than the tedious addresss of Gonerill and Regan. The most of import disclosure of this scene is the character of King Lear. Lear is a hot headed, irrational, rash adult male who can non distinguish between truth and misrepresentation. He is so caught up in this universe of being King that he forgets that before being King he is a human being. In every Shakespearian calamity there is a defect in the lead character that consequences in his ruin and the ruin of all around him. In the instance of Hamlet it was indecisiveness # 8220 ; To be or non to be? To make or non to make? # 8221 ; etc. In the instance of King Lear it is King Lear # 8217 ; s self-importance and self-deceit that cause his ruin and we get an disposition to what this tragic defect is in the first scene. The first scene besides serves as an debut to the subjects and secret plans of the drama. The secret plan between Gloucester and Edmond is introduced in a obscure mode in the sense that we know there is a hapless relationship between them. Towards the terminal of the scene the conversation between Gonerill an Regan reveal another secret plan as they unwrap their purposes of covering with their senile male parent # 8211 ; # 8221 ; We must make something and I # 8217 ; th # 8217 ; heat # 8221 ; .The chief subjects of the drama are revealed, the subject of Blindness and Self misrepresentation are revealed via King Lear # 8217 ; s behaviour and the subject of parent kid relationships are revealed through Gloucester and Edmond, and King Lear and his girls. One of the most of import subjects of the drama of Appearance versus Reality, Lear # 8217 ; s inability to see through Gonerill # 8217 ; s use of words and Cordellia truth as untenderness all illustrate this subject. The scene besides reveals a job that will turn subsequently on in the drama of the reversal of functions and th e constitution of abnormalcy. The ostracism of Cordellia and Kent is a good illustration of this. The scene in entirety serves as debut to the drama and everything related to the drama, such as setting- the dark ages- with a batch of mention to the Moon and darkness. 363

Brought before the Diet of Worms, Luther maintained his controversial views and was judged and outlaw but managed to escape the law with the help of friends and continue his writing and through it convert many, called Lutherans, to his views. Though not his intent, in time this led to a revolt of the peasants in 1524, spurned by his teachings. The peasants were easily crushed and control still belonged to the princes. Many cities converted to Lutheran, but those that stayed Catholic tried to force the others back to their way of thinking and when the Lutherans protested they became ?Protestants? and the name became one to describe anyone who broke away from Catholicism. In What Ways Do you Consider Decline and Fall To Be A Comic Novel Essays

In What Ways Do you Consider Decline and Fall To Be A Comic Novel Essays In What Ways Do you Consider Decline and Fall To Be A Comic Novel Essay In What Ways Do you Consider Decline and Fall To Be A Comic Novel Essay Essay Topic: Literature Evelyn Waugh has wrote the book Decline and Fall as a statement of what he felt was wrong with the English society in the 1920s. This is reflected through his book using a very dry and ironic humour. The novel is very much satirical, with the main character, Paul Pennyfather, satirising the English culture. In order to show this, I have chosen two events in the book, and I will focus on how Evelyn Waugh makes them comic. The two I have chosen are the sports day and the restoration of Kings Thursday house. To set the scene, in the first part of the novel, Paul Pennyfather had been dismissed from the Oxford University he had been studying at. He needed a job, so he went to work as a teacher at a public school. Unfortunately, he was sent to work at the awful llanabba Castle School. The teachers were all frauds, and their teaching methods were chaotic. The school is generally a disaster. This is Waughs way of saying the schooling system in England is a shambles. One of the events that is particularly funny is the sports day. The first humour comes in the ironic speech made by Dr Fagan, where he says During the last 14 years at this school, there have been six sports days and two concerts, all of which have been utterly disastrous. This is again commenting on how bad the school is. The teachers start talking about how well presented this years sports day is. Then, quite ironically Paul comments Nothing seems to have been done about marking out the ground. Imagine the ensuing chaos as boys ran frantically round, with the teachers setting their own race distances! As for the newly delivered hurdles, they were only Five feet high and were painted green with spikes. So the doctor, in a very sarcastic manner says It seems they have sent the wrong sort. The sports day starts to turn into a disaster. The Doctor says he wants there to be some style involved in the event. When he asks for a starting pistol, Philbrick pulls out his enormous revolver. He then says careful, its loaded. This made me laugh, what sort of school sports day uses a loaded revolver as a starting pistol? The then band arrives. Described by Waugh as men of revolting appearance. He said they were like a loping tread of wolves and ape-like. Philbrick then says Loonies! This is where I shoot. The teachers then find out that it is the band the school have booked. This was very ironic. Dr Fagans insulting comment regarding the bands Welsh nationality, then began insulting the bands nationality, they mate freely with the sheep. Further enhances the comedy of the situation. As the first race started, Mr Prendergast managed to shoot one of the boys in the foot. This was very dry humour coming into play as the book says clearly Tangent was not going to win. This was yet another sarcastic yet very funny line. The second part I will be focusing on is the re-building of Kings Thursday House. Margot Beste-Chetwynde owned the country house and it was in desperate need of restoration. It had not been changed for hundreds of years, but it was still a remarkable house. The house went up for sale and it was bought by Lord Pastmasters sister-in-law. The first ironic humour to hit this chapter it when Waugh is describing how Margot visited the house she owned for the first and only time. She said it was worse than I thought, whilst all the villagers who lived nearby almost worshipped the house. This shows a definite class distinction in Waughs writing. Margot decided to re-store the house, so she employed an architect who was given the instruction Something clean and square. So basically Margot wanted to change everything good about the house. The comic part in this section of the book is the interview by a journalist, with the architect. He is criticising his own profession, by saying I dont think it is possible to make architecture beautiful. Pessimistically he says Man is never beautiful, He says. My impression of this man is a crazy pessimistic architect who is a failure. The journalist realises this and tries a different approach by asking how much he expects to earn out of the job. The man replies by saying fuel. This made me laugh because here is yet another aspect of English society that in Waughs mind is a failure art. The architect carries on being pessimistic by saying in a gloomy voice I suppose there will have to be a staircase, why cant people just stay in one place? He then has another dig at humans by saying that they dont stay still and work. Followed by another amusing comment Do dynamos require staircases? Do monkeys require houses? He then goes on about how the human race is immature, self-destructive and half-formed. I think the man fails to realise he is a human himself. He is the complete opposite of what an architect should be full of ideas and full of life. Whereas this man is a sarcastic, unhappy and uncreative architect. This is what makes him such a failure, and ultimately what makes his character funny. Waugh has therefore displayed this event in an ironically amusing context. Although I have only focused on two parts in the novel, the same theme runs throughout the book. Waugh makes it clear that he thinks the English culture is a complete shambles. He has taken some quite serious events in Paul Pennyfathers life, and managed to make them interesting, and above all very amusing. In my view, Evelyn Waugh is a great comic novelist.

Renault FT Tank in World War I

Renault FT Tank in World War I The Renault FT, often referred to as the FT-17, was a ground-breaking tank design which entered service in 1918. A French light tank, the FT was the first tank to incorporate many design aspects which are now considered standard such as a fully-rotating turret and rear engine compartment. Small by World War I standards, the FT was intended to swarm through the enemys lines and overwhelm defenders. Used by French and American forces on the Western Front, the design was produced in large numbers and retained by many nations until the early days of World War II. Development The origins of the Renault FT may be traced to an early meeting between Louis Renault and Colonel Jean-Baptiste Eugà ¨ne Estienne in 1915. Overseeing the fledgling French tank corps which had been created during the early years of World War I, Estienne hoped to have Renault design and build an armored vehicle based on the Holt tractor. Operating with the backing of General Joseph Joffre, he was seeking firms to moved the project forward. Though intrigued, Renault declined citing a lack of experience with tracked vehicles and commenting that his factories were already operating at capacity. Not to be demurred, Estienne took his project to Schneider-Creusot which created the French Armys first tank, the Schneider CA1. Though he had declined the initial tank project, Renault commenced developing a design for a light tank that would be relatively simple to produce. Assessing the landscape of the time, he concluded that existing engines lacked the necessary power-to-weight ratio to allow armored vehicles to successfully clear trenches, shell holes, and other obstacles. As a result, Renault sought to limit his design to 7 tons. As he continued to refine his thoughts on a light tank design, he had another meeting with Estienne in July 1916. Increasingly interested in smaller, lighter tanks which he believed could overwhelm defenders in ways that larger, heavier tanks could not, Estienne encouraged Renaults work. While this support would proved critical, Renault struggled to gain acceptance of his design from Minister of Munitions Albert Thomas and the French high command. After extensive work, Renault received permission to build a single prototype. Design Working with his talented industrial designer Rodolphe Ernst-Metzmaier, Renault sought to bring his theories into reality. The resulting design  set the pattern for all future tanks. Though fully-revolving turrets had been used on a variety of French armored cars, the FT was the first tank to incorporate this feature. This allowed the smaller tank to fully utilize a single weapon rather than needing multiple guns mounted in sponsons with limited fields of fire. The FT also set the precedent for placing the driver in the front and the engine in the rear. The incorporation of these features made the FT a radical departure from previous French designs, such as the Schneider CA1 and the St. Chamond, which were little more than armored boxes. Operated by a crew of two, the FT mounted a rounded tail piece to aid in crossing trenches and included automatically tensioned tacks to help prevent derailments. Crew positions in a Renault FT-17 tank. National Archives and Records Administration To ensure that engine power would be maintained, the power plant was designed to operate effectively when slanted to allow the tank to traverse steep slopes. For crew comfort, ventilation was provided by the engines radiator fan. Though in close proximity, no provision was made for crew communication during operations. As a result, gunners devised a system of kicking the driver in the shoulders, back, and head to transmit directions. Armament for the FT typically consisted of either a Puteaux SA 18 37 mm gun or a 7.92 mm Hotchkiss machine gun.   Renault FT - Specifications Dimensions Length: 16.4 ft.Width: 4.8 ft.Height: 7 ft.Weight: 7.2 tons Armor Armament Armor: 0.86 in.Armament: 37 mm Puteaux gun or a 7.92 mm Hotchkiss machine gunAmmunition: 238 x 37mm projectiles or 4,200 x 7.62mm ammunition Engine Engine: 39 hp gasoline engineSpeed: 4.35 mphRange: 40 milesSuspension: Vertical SpringsCrew: 2 Production Despite its advanced design, Renault continued to have difficulty getting approval for the FT. Ironically, its chief competition came from the heavy Char 2C which was also designed by Ernst-Metzmaier. With the relentless support Estienne, Renault was able to move the FT into production. Though he had Estiennes support, Renault competed for resources with the Char 2C for the remainder of the war. Development continued through the first half of 1917, as Renault and Ernst-Metzmaier sought to refine the design. By the end of the year, only 84 FTs had been produced, however 2,613 were built in 1918, before the end of hostilities. All told, 3,694 were constructed by French factories with 3,177 going to the French Army, 514 to the US Army, and 3 to the Italians. The tank was also built under license in the US under the name Six Ton Tank M1917. While only 64 were finished before the armistice, 950 were eventually constructed. When the tank first entered production, it had a round cast turret, however this varied depending on the manufacturer. Other variants included an octagonal turret or one made from bent steel plate. French Renault FTs advance through Vaux, 1918. Library of Congress Combat Service The FT first entered combat on May 31, 1918, at Foret de Retz, south-west of Soissons, and aided the 10th Army in slowing the German drive on Paris. In short order, the FTs small size increased its value as it was capable of traversing terrain, such as forests, that other heavy tanks were incapable of negotiating. As the tide turned in the Allies favor, Estienne finally received large numbers of the tank, which allowed for effective counterattacks against German positions. The FT saw use at the Second Battle of the Marne as well as during the Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. Widely used by French and American forces, the FT ultimately participated in 4,356 engagements with 746 being lost to enemy action. Postwar Following the war, the FT formed the armored backbone for many nations, including the United States. The tank saw subsequent action in the Russian Civil War, Polish-Soviet War, Chinese Civil War, and Spanish Civil War. In addition it remained in the reserve forces for several countries. During the early days of World War II, the French still had 534 operating in various capacities. In 1940, following the German drive to the Channel which isolated many of Frances best armored units, the entire French reserve force was committed, including 575 FTs. With the fall of France, the Wehrmacht captured 1,704 FTs. These were redeployed across Europe for airbase defense and occupation duty. In Britain and the United States, the FT was retained for use as a training vehicle. Additional FTs were retained by Vichy French forces in North Africa. These were encountered by American and British forces during the Operation Torch landings in late 1942 and were easily defeated by the Allies modern M3 Stuart and M4 Sherman tanks.

Acid Ratios Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Acid Ratios - Essay Example The current ratio uses total current assets and total current liabilities. Total current assets are divided by total current liabilities to give the current ratio. Meanwhile, acid test ratio is found by the use of total current assets, total current liabilities, and inventory. The equation for the quick ratio is inventory taken away from total current assets and divided by total current liabilities. 1. In order to work out the current ratio for Thingamajigs and Things, we first need to find out the components of the equation so we can calculate the current ratio. Thingamajigs and Things’ total current assets are worth $45,000, and their total current liabilities are $9,000. If we divide the total current assets by the total current liabilities then we get a ratio of exactly 5 (Lane, 2011). In looking at WannaBees, we can see that they have total current assets of $150,000 and total current liabilities of $85,000. Once we conduct the calculation for the current ratio, we get a figure of 1.76 (Lane, 2011). In determining what these numbers mean, we first have to judge what figure is an acceptable figure to have. The current ratio should not go below 1 or else the company should be concerned (Kennon, 2011). In general, a high current ratio shows that the business has sufficient amounts of cash on hand and cannot be considered a financial risk. In this case, Thingamajigs and Things has a much higher current ratio than WannaBees. If both of these companies were applying for a bank loan, Thingamajigs and Things would be more likely to receive it. 2. Thingamajigs and Things’ total current assets are $45,000, its total current liabilities are $9,000, and its inventory is worth $30,000. If we conduct an acid test ratio, we come up with a figure of 1.67 (Lane, 2011). On the other hand, WannaBees has total current assets of $150,000, total current liabilities of $85,000, and an

Critical Exploration by Using Gibbs Model Essay - 1

Critical Exploration by Using Gibbs Model - Essay Example A 2nd-year student is practicing as a nurse at a hospital. The girl is very sweet, caring and loving towards her patients. She is always up to help other staff members with a smile. However, she has trouble in being able to prioritize and co-ordinate the attention needs of patients that we both have duties for. She also seems to lack confidence in her nursing skills and has teething troubles in linking theory to practice.  The result of the study reveals that the girl needs to understand what she wants to achieve. In this case, it is very obvious what she wants to achieve but she is not sure how to achieve it. The consequences of not prioritizing her duties make her more frustrated and annoyed and at the end of the day, nothing has achieved the way she wants to achieve it. It is also expected that some of the patients end up saying that want a different nurse to take care of them. As frequently does not complete the instructions given to her by these other staff and leaves the care given to patients unfinished. At the second stage of the Gibbs model, it can be said that the girl needs this practice because she wants to end up at some great hospital but if she continues to give such results that are poor practices, poorly set priorities it is giving out a bad image of her and the further recommendation for her are at stake. The student for sure feels the responsibility she has but as an amateur, she is finding difficulties in some areas and usually panics. She needs someone to guide her for at least a week so that she improves her practice and give satisfying results. However, the good part is the girl is willing to help. She wants to be someone and never refuses to work. In short, the girl has proved to be a very hard working dedicated worker but needs to manage things a little more. Most nursing students will attain the expertise criterions they need to catalog but tutors may be faced with an apprentice whose  presentation is scrawny.

Loves Labours Lost Essay -- Plays Shakespeare Papers

Love's Labour's Lost The Elizabethans thought of it merely as "a wittie and pleasant comedie" ; Samuel Johnson remarked that "all the editors have concurred to censure [it]" ; and William Hazlitt opined, "If we were to part with any of the author's comedies, it should be this." It was not until well into the twentieth century that Love's Labour's Lost really came into its own, and this fact alone may be enough to make a case for it as Shakespeare's most forward-looking play. It is its ending in particular, an unexpectedly grim conclusion in which nothing is actually concluded, that has appealed to modern sensibilities and made Love's Labour's Lost the Shakespeare play for the twentieth century. Trevor Nunn makes this point emphatically in a recent National Theatre production that presents Love's Labour's Lost as a tale of society's passage out of the nineteenth century in the devastation of World War I. Though neither this idea nor any other aspect of his production is entirely novel, it emerges as possi bly the darkest interpretation of the play yet presented, taking the disturbing qualities that have so delighted modern audiences and pressing them to their limits and beyond. Reading the play now, it seems hard to believe that the unusualness of the ending could have gone apparently unnoticed for so long. With the stage set for the usual comedic ending of multiple marriages, the news of the Princess's father's death comes as a complete shock: Marcadà © enters at a moment of such carefree mirth that the Princess playfully chides him, "thou interruptest our merriment" (5.2.712). A moment later, his news is told and the atmosphere of the play has noticeably changed, as Berowne himself acknowledges when he says, "The scene begin... ...ns. Ultimately, Nunn succeeds in making his dark vision of Love's Labour's Lost convincing, and in using the play to make the usual points (the fleeting nature of happiness and happy endings, the necessity of confronting difficult realities, the inevitability of death) with exceptional force. But these triumphs come at the price of two priceless aspects of Shakespeare's ending: its unanticipated overthrow of audience expectations and its startlingly modern open-endedness.
